Teddupuie against gambling?
Every publisher takes a gamble on every
writing, and America was founded on gambling right from the start.
A friend of mine always said that
life was like a poker game. He wasn't a publisher, but he was a gold miner and
the son of a prospector, so maybe he looked at life from a strange angle of the
dangle, but I don't think so. Gambling is the nature of humans, and if we want
to survive, we should at least consider embracing the most effective way to
advance our species environment. If we had never taken the chance to do anything
different, we would still be living in caves. I for one, do not want to hunt
with a spear to feed my family, nor do I want to store my meat in a barrel of
tallow. I like the idea of a changing world, where we all take a few chances in
hopes of hitting it big. It may seem selfish, but in a long run, individuals
risking ridicule and shame have done more for the rest of us than we ever did
for ourselves. It is the gambler that has given us air travel, motor travel,
refrigeration, electricity, insulation, eyeglasses and false teeth. I'm only
guessing, but the invention of the smoke detector may have made a few families
rich, but a lot of families safer. So, can Teddupuie complain about gambling?
Sure. As a publisher and a writing critic, Teddupuie can nitpick any subject.
Gambling is based on greed, and ego. The hopes of getting
more, and the thought that I am capable of getting more, even when playing the
lotto with odds of millions to one. These are not reasonable feelings in the
perfect society, where greed and self centered people do not exist. But we do
not live in the perfect society. Teddupuie is the publisher of a stock market
strategy, because we see the need for a planned control when it comes to money
and many other things of value. To gamble away the household bill money is not a
good thing in any society. To gamble away the life savings of your heir is not a
reasonable act. To gamble away your children's food money is insanity. So
gambling is not as wonderful as is started at the top of this page. Gamblers
anonymous is akin to alcoholics anonymous, in the respect that the problem is a
lifelong addiction humans can define, but cannot control from a clinic. There
are many pages published for and about the addicted gambler by publishers
throughout the world.
The fine line between entertainment and education holds
the word "gambling". To gamble is to stand on the fence and walk the
top of the fence so as not to be in either yard. Entertainment and education are
the yards on either side of the gambler that walks the fence. It all started
when the fence walker was a small child and the firelight dazzled the eyes and
tweaked the imagination. Fire. It is beauty of movement and color and almost
invisible in places. But what does it feel like? Can one pick up and hold the
magical quality that dances in the air above the stove? Let's try..... A child
can go straight from entertainment to education in the tearful blink of an eye.
Then mommy takes over. How many times do you imagine it has written by the
publisher of a fitness magazine, "No pain, no gain"? It is also called
"learning things the hard way" or "school of hard knocks",
but no matter how you say it, it is still education. Entertainment on the other
hand is a very strange word.
The definition of gambling varies with each person you
speak to, but I would imagine that a majority of the negative responses have
dice, slot machines and card playing in mind. I would also guess that the next
biggest block of people against gambling are stock market investors.
Financial loss verses financial gain has a risk/reward ratio that must be in
reasonable perspective or chaos is inevitable. To bet a million dollars for the
gain of one dollar is unthinkable, but to bet one dollar to gain a million is an
everyday event. Social standards are changing rapidly on how much risk is
acceptable for the average Joe. Computer aided sports handicapping and online
betting are becoming very popular. But does that make it a good thing for the
future of mankind? Teddupuie the publisher, says no. A man that knows nothing
about investing should not be taught that gambling is fun, and then he goes to
work and has a choice on how to invest his retirement money. The outcome can be
catastrophic for his future, but multiply his scenario by millions and see what
happens to the stock market. Everyone can lose! I think the governments should
show a little more education in running their lotto's, instead of making it all
entertainment.
A professional gambler is a person willing to take higher
risks than the average Joe, because s/he is either more educated in the game,
more intuitive, or both. But the advantage goes to the professional all the
same. It is this feeling of having an advantage that defines the difference
between a good gambler and a poor one. The good gambler understands the odds
against them and the poor gambler hopes for a victorious outcome. One person
relies on luck while the other trusts skills. In both cases the game itself is
high risk. Gambling is all about high risk. Of course the rewards are also high
or there would be no enticement for the gambler. As a publisher, I take risks in
what I write and especially what other people think I am trying to say. If I do
not make it clear, I risk ruining Teddupuie as a publisher. The reward is a
calculated, long term gain of confidence from outsiders, that will eventually
turn into a profit. A one dollar lottery ticket has approximately a six and one
half to one odds against the buyer of that ticket to win anything at all, with a
maximum of $500. The multi-million dollar lotto's have ridiculous odds against
the bettor. Which is the philosophy you would want your children learning in
school?
