A publisher complaint
Every publisher, even Teddupuie can
complain about the usage of words in a story.
My complaint is not about the
misuse of words, so much as the insistence on using words in just the most
proper manner. Phooey on that. Too many publishers are holding down some great
writers because they feel the writer doesn't reach the standards of their
readers. This is a flagrant misuse of power for monetary gain at the expense of
art. Mark Twain ruined the English language and became famous for his misuse of
grammar, and spelling. He changed the meaning of many a word to suit the story
he was trying to tell, and many readers, many generations later have appreciated
his efforts. Well now, ain't that a classic tale we could all tell. Some fool
trying to tell us we need to be just like them so we can get ahead, when
in reality, they really mean, "Do it my way or I'll keep you from making
it."
A story publisher
Too many publishers want to find
the English major who just graduated college and make them the first person to
read an amateur's story. After years of reading nothing but professionally
written books designed and sold to schools, the student is far from ready to
become the judge over who gets published and who doesn't. The publisher has good
reason for this thinking, but it is strictly a financial thing. They want to get
a reputation for selling expensive books that are advertised on TV, and they are
trying to avoid any controversy their writers may bring to the media. There is
many a publisher making big bucks, and all they have to do is sacrifice the
illiterate. Maybe most of the publishers today should reread Mark Twain, or
Erskine Caldwell in God's little acre. It should be the story that is the
primary focus to the publisher. The reason these books have become classics, is
that the majority of our illiterate society can read them. It's the story we can
understand.
The misuse of words in a story
I have this thing about finishing a
book once I decide to read it, and I usually decide on the first few pages. I
also remember reading this terrible book that had to do with a woman not loving
her husband, but managing to stick with him until his death many years later.
The story was much better than the book, and I didn't want to stick with this
trash by the fifth page. Oh well, I have this thing about finishing a story. The
problem was the dictionary. I only own a paperback version of a dictionary and
the publisher demanded a three volume, leather bound version. Sorry, I don't own
one. About every two or three pages, this writer said something I didn't
understand with the misuse of the English language. It would be one word that I
had no meaning of in my mind and the story never filled in with a hint as to
what the word meant, hence the dictionary. I don't mind this under normal
circumstances, but in this case, I couldn't find the word in my dictionary and
had to just ignore the word altogether. At first, I didn't know I could ignore
the word, but figured I would get the meaning as the story unraveled. No meaning
ever appeared for any of the words, but after a while I realized that the writer
was trying to impress the publisher, so she could get her book published. It
worked, and it stinks! I was the only one to suffer, and the reader should be
the one that gets enjoyment from a story. Like I said, the story wasn't all that
bad, but the book should have never been published. And just so it doesn't sound
like I'm badmouthing every publisher, I have read books by surgeons and lawyers
that were very good.
The oddball story for the oddball
publisher
Am I still complaining? Oh yeah!
How come I can find a publisher that is looking for Satanic ritual lovers, or a
publisher wanting any kind of story about gays and lesbians, when I can't find a
publisher for a regular story by a regular writer. Oh there are plenty of
publishers for the exceptional writer, and there are some that will even let you
send them a synopsis for that new graduate to eyeball, but I mean a real
publisher so real writers can get a reasonable determination within weeks, not a
year or longer. Writers have lives too! And they are the ones with the story
that may become a classic.
