Publisher versus Publisher
One more complaint from a publisher,
about other publishers
It seems to me that every publisher
has a responsibility to satisfy the reader, and that responsibility has gone the
way of the horse carriage. In these fast times of electronic and digital
everything, the publisher has forgotten about the most important ingredient in
the success of all publishing, and that ingredient is art. It is true that
television, games and transportation has turned the reader into a potato, but it is
also true that the education system in the United States has long since become a
laughing matter. The last time I heard, we were number 13 in education in the
world, and that was many years ago. Is reading gone for us?
One hundred years ago it wasn't
uncommon for a child to quit school in the seventh or eighth grade to stay at
home and help with the milking of the cows and other chores, today a child
graduating from high school still has no practical experience or a competitive
education. So maybe the publisher isn't to blame as much as our government. But
I do wonder about the books our educators are using to teach our children. Is
everything different from when I went to school? I know they teach making
websites and computer literacy, but I wonder about reading comprehension,
because what good is a book if it can't be read? Maybe it doesn't really matter,
they didn't teach that much when I was a kid.
While the average Joe loses his
ability to read and comprehend literature, the publishers are making it more
difficult for the average Joe to get the manuscript he has written past the
first step in publication. Or maybe the plan is to have only college graduates
reading in the future, and the masses will just watch TV. Sound unlikely? Think
about the change that has taken place in the last century, then think about a
century from now. It is scary! A century ago, many people could read just enough
to get by, but they all had a craving to read more. A century from now, many
people will be able to read a little, but none of them will want to read more.
It has started already, and we can all see it, but what about the children in
school? Is our education going to suffer for a century before we have a
publisher bring in the best teaching methods in the world, or will we still be
behind a century from now?
What about the publishers of
law? Can a man get away with murder if he is rich enough? Did you know a Senator
cannot be brought to trial for sexual harassment in the workplace? After given a
death sentence, a prisoner is guaranteed in writing, another seven years. A
Michigan woman wrote the President of the United States, and stated in the
letter that she thought the country would be better off if he were to get
assassinated. She got ten years in prison for threatening his life. An adult
Texan, living with his mother, let her starve to death. In court, it was
determined that he had no responsibility for taking care of her, but had the
tables been turned and she let him starve, she would have been sent to
prison.
The exact wording of a law is very important, and the
longest sentences in the world were written by lawyers. Can you believe one
sentence a few pages long? It's common, but then so is getting off Scot free
because the charges were written on the wrong kind of paper. I have my own ideas
on what a publisher should have to say about laws and people, but I will express
those opinions on another page, so I do not get too far off the track here. A
publisher has a responsibility to the reader. It can be declared in
entertainment or knowledge. It can be a gorgeous picture of a naked lady, or
spiritual guidance in a sermon that grabs you. The main thing is that it focuses
your attention. If it does only that, then it is a start. But a publisher should
strive for more. Now that they have your attention, they should give you
something to walk away with: A reason for getting your attention in the first
place. Like calling a dog, there should be a bone to throw. Mine's coming up
soon. For now, I still have complaints about publishers.
Religious practices are probably the oldest example of
publisher gone awry. Human virgin sacrifice is nothing to be proud of, yet it
was carved in stone for all of mankind to contemplate for our education. All
churches today seem to disagree with the practice of human sacrifice, but eager
to publish their new rules and regulations. And claiming they were not the same
religion to publish the first rules. Don't they have the same God? When did God
change to a different entity? I must have missed something that was published in
history, because I thought a religion was just a way to practice the reverence
of God.
A publisher of religious material holds the same
responsibility as a publisher of any other kind; to entertain or inform in a
manner that can be understood. Yet the rules that are being published is the
basis for most wars, and the evasion of practical help for starving children
around the world. Between the governments, religions, and languages of mankind,
it is a wonder that anyone gets help from Mother Nature. As a publisher, I feel
the responsibility is mine to spread the word to all of these fools about how to
go about living a decent life. Egotistical? Who cares? Someone has to do
something about the poor practice of publishers in the world today, and Saquoyah
is the publisher willing to try.
